History of the Audubon Louisiana Nature Center
The Louisiana Nature Center first opened its gates in Joe Brown Park on March 23, 1980, offering visitors a beautiful glimpse into the Mississippi River Delta and Louisiana Coastal Zone. In 1993, the center joined forces with Audubon Nature Center, marking a new chapter as the “Audubon Louisiana Nature Center.” This beloved institution welcomed around 85,000 visitors yearly, with a significant portion dedicated to educating 45,000 students through its valuable outreach programs.
Sadly, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Nature Center in August 2005, submerging it under six feet of water for over a month. The storm also wreaked havoc on the surrounding forest and its structures, forcing the center to close its doors.
Through unwavering determination, Audubon’s leaders, along with FEMA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and various government and community figures, devised a comprehensive restoration plan. This collective effort has led to the revitalized Audubon Louisiana Nature Center we cherish today.
